Baltimore City District 12 Council Candidate Dave Heilker Delivers Food, Supplies to Vulnerable Public Housing Residents in Douglas Homes
Last week, it was reported in the Baltimore Brew that the HABC (Baltimore City Housing Authority) had blocked volunteers from distributing food and resources to residents in Douglas Homes, a public housing development in District 12.
These distributions had been blocked in spite of volunteers practicing social distancing, even though residents reported that meal distribution for residents had ceased without notice from HABC.
Dave Heilker, a community organizer, activist, and progressive Democrat who is running for Baltimore City Council in District 12, felt what he describes “a moral imperative to help the residents in Douglas Homes”
“It is true that public health and safety during this trying and chaotic time are paramount. We also know people in marginalized communities are being disproportionately impacted by Coronavirus, layoffs, and a lack of access to food, transportation, and necessary resources for this crisis.
“When I saw a need, our campaign stepped up. We worked with District 12 businesses Mount Royal Soap Company and Charm City Meadworks to facilitate the donation and delivery of more than fifty pounds of nonperishable food (including several bags of Easter Candy) and more than three-hundred bottles of gel hand sanitizer and liquid soap.”
The cleaning products are being produced by Mount Royal Soap Company, a small business in the Remington Neighborhood, who is currently one of the only hygiene products companies in Maryland producing FDA-Approved Hand Sanitizer Gel.
“We’ve been seeking out ways to help marginalized communities and frontline healthcare workers,” said Matt Williams, one of the proprietors of Mount Royal Soap Co. “It has been frustrating to try to get these into folks’ hands. We are grateful to Dave and his campaign for being a leader and connecting us with the people living in Douglas Homes. We’re looking forward to working with his campaign to do more.”
